He lost. In high school and college and law school, he had sex with men – scores of men – but dated women, advancing the straight guy image that he believed his planned political future was dependent upon.

“I think everyone goes through different emotional cycles, myself included”, he says. At times I was angry with myself. I said, “How did I sacrifice everything that I’ve worked for, for such a relationship, such a seemingly stupid relationship, an illegitimate affair? It goes back to, you know, when I acted out of truth and integrity I produced good things, and when I acted out of fear and secrecy I produced bad things.
